Cape Town in June

June is a great time to visit Cape Town

June might be the beginning of winter in Cape Town but there are many advantages to the cooler weather. For a start, the tourist areas are much quieter which can be a bonus with less queuing and more opportunities to take some great photos with fewer people getting in the way!

Everywhere is much more green at this time of year as there is more rainfall and lower temperatures. Hiking is also more pleasurable than in the summer heat so it can be a good time to explore the beautiful surroundings and scenery.

For those more adventurous visitors, this time of year is when the surf is at its best. The winter months bring experienced surfers to the coast ready to make the most of the bigger waves and better wind conditions.

Apart from the great surf, another coastal attraction is having the chance to whale watch. Over the winter months, the southern right and humpback whales can be seen calving in the waters just off the coast. There are boat trips which afford a closer view of these amazing animals.

The very brave can book a shark cage experience, for that adventure of a lifetime. Gansbaai is known as the great white capital of the world with great whites being present in the area over the winter months.

Still, on a fishy theme, the Two Oceans Aquarium is well worth a visit. As they say it best in their own words ‘The southern tip of the African continent is the meeting place of two mighty and bountiful oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic. The Two Oceans Aquarium on the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town is ideally positioned to showcase the incredible diversity of marine life found in these two oceans.
